The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has announced that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and four wounded yesterday.
MOD spokesman Colonel Oleksandr Motuzyanyk did not specify where or how the casualties had been incurred.
Earlier this morning, the Ukrainian military reported that Russia-backed forces had conducted 49 attacks yesterday, using mortars in all three main sectors of the front line.
The police report no casualties so far.
This video purportedly captures the sound of outgoing shelling from inside separatist-held Donetsk city:
In the south, military press officer Aleksandr Kindsfater told Mariupol news site 0629.com.ua that Russia-backed forces had shelled positions near Vodyanoye, east of the port city, with 82-mm mortars.
In Shirokino, on the Azov coast, Ukrainian marines reportedly came under fire from BMP infantry fighting vehicles, in addition to grenade launchers, machine guns and small arms, which the military says were also used near Pavlopol and Gnutovo.
Two more attacks on Vodyanoye and Shirokino were reported by Kindsfater between midnight and 6:00 this morning.
In Novotroitskoye, on the Donetsk-Mariupol highway, Ukrainian troops came under sniper fire.
Meanwhile, the Russia-backed separatists in Donetsk claim this afternoon that two of their fighters have been killed by Ukrainian fire in the last 24 hours.
Eduard Basurin, military spokesman for the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR), said today that Ukrainian forces had fired almost 600 tank, artillery or rocket shells over that time.
In particular, the DNR claims that Ukrainian forces fired Grad rockets at Yasinovataya, on the northeastern outskirts of Donetsk, with other attacks taking place on the northern outskirts of Donetsk and villages to the east of Mariupol.
