An Invasion By Any Other Name: The Kremlin’s Dirty War in Ukraine

An Irregular Pattern In Fighting

The bloodshed has returned to Ukraine after one of the country’s least bloody weeks. Truth be told, however, that though ceasefire violations have been smaller in number over the last few days, the lack of casualties had more to do with luck.

At Friday morning’s briefing, the Ukrainian military was somewhat optimistic that a new June 1 ceasefire was taking hold.

That optimism is likely gone. At the Saturday morning briefing, the Ukrainian military reported that there had been 53 ceasefire violations over the previous 24 hours, a return to deadly form. Two Ukrainian soldiers were killed and five were wounded in the fighting.

Unian.info reports:

“Almost half of ceasefire violations was recorded in the Mariupol sector, namely there were 25 militant attacks. In particular, the Ukrainian fortified positions near the village of Chermalyk repeatedly came under fire from 120mm mortars. The enemy also fired 82mm mortars on ATO positions near the town of Maryinka from the outskirts of the temporarily occupied Donetsk. Thus, at about 17:00 Kyiv time, several enemy mortar shells hit the residential area of Maryinka. As a result, two local residents were wounded,” the ATO HQ posted on Facebook.

In the Donetsk sector, the situation deteriorated in the past 24 hours. In particular, the enemy opened fire from 120mm and 82mm mortars and lighter weapons on Ukrainian strong points in the southern and eastern outskirts of Avdiyivka. Furthermore, the defenders of the village of Pisky were shelled from 120mm mortars and grenade launchers.
