An Invasion By Any Other Name: The Kremlin’s Dirty War in Ukraine
Today, Sunday, May 22, the Ukrainian government reports that Russian-backed separatists have launched 18 attacks. Unian.info reports:
“Having attacked the town of Avdiyivka with the use of heavy artillery systems at night, the enemy continued shelling strongholds of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near the town,” the press center wrote on Facebook in its update as of 18:00 Kyiv time on Sunday.
Russian-backed militants opened fire from small arms, large-caliber machine guns, and grenade launchers on the areas near the town several times during the day.

In a separate report, Unian described heavy fighting near Avdeyevka, on the front lines near Donetsk. According to that report, one Ukrainian soldier was killed, another wounded, and a civilian was also wounded in the fighting:
“Some missiles hit local residents’ houses, which caught fire. Immediately after the attacks on our positions, militants turned their weapons and fired in the direction of Donetsk,” the ATO HQ wrote on Facebook on Sunday morning, adding the provocation was conducted to blame the ATO forces.
Avdiyivka was attacked twice with the use of 122mm artillery systems.
One civilian woman, born in 1956, received shrapnel wounds, her house at 225 Kirova Street was destroyed and burnt out.
Another missile hit a house at 9 Levanevskoho Street. The windows, roof and facade of the house were damaged, according to the National Police division in Donetsk region. Investigators are working on the site now.

Russian proxies severely attacked the residential area of the town of Avdiyivka in Donetsk region at night, having wounded one civilian, one Ukrainian soldier and killed another soldier; they then turned their weapons to shell the militant-controlled city of Donetsk as an act of provocation, according to the press center of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) Headquarters.
